FB Watch – Pass or Flop?

We have so many ways to watch video’s nowadays it is getting hard to keep up, but now the social media giant Facebook has created a program called ‘Watch’.

According to Advertising Age, the new video service called ‘Watch’ will appear as a tab in both the Facebook mobile app and the desktop version. The videos that will appear on this service are called ‘shows’ and will feature content from sites such as Mashable and National Geographic. These ‘shows’ will be episodic and have advertisements featured in them.

Advertising Age also stated that Facebook wants ‘Watch’ to be a “platform for creators and publishers to find an audience, build a community of passionate fans and earn money for their work.” This platform would rival video services such as Youtube or Dailymotion.

I think that it’s going to take Facebook a while to be as popular as Youtube is, and I think as consumers we are not really looking for another video platform.

Do you think this is a good idea? Do you think it will succeed or flop?

Let me know in the comments what you think!

Thanks 🙂

  1. I agree with you, I don’t think consumers particularly need another video platform, I think it wont ever really be able to compete with YouTube, unless something happened to YouTube I reckon it’ll be a bit of a flop. Its just not really needed I don’t know why Facebook bother really, if they wanted it to be successful they should have had some new feature that YouTube doesn’t have!

  2. I think this is another one of Facebook’s attempts to steal another companies idea (ie YouTube’s) like they did by introducing Insta-Stories on Instagram to rival Snapchat. I don’t think it will be successful simply because anyone who is creating videos will already be doing it on YouTube and already have a following. Asking these content creators to then basically start a whole new channel on Facebook from nothing seems pointless because they don’t need another place to post videos

  3. I was actually going to speak about this on Spotlight! Overall, I think it’s a bit strange that Facebook is trying to make itself more like YouTube. Although yes we all watch a lot of videos on our Facebook feed, I would not necessarily think of to go on their to just simply watch videos! I feel like Facebook is trying to integrate as much as possible into it’s app like how they have added ‘stories’ and it’s getting a bit overwhelming. To me, Facebook is for connecting and staying in touch with friends, not to watch videos specifically created for Facebook!

  4. I think if they can differentiate themselves from SnapChat News videos, News sites, Twitter, Netflix etc… then it will work. They will need original content though and I think with all of their data it can be targeted directly to each consumer, so yeah it would work probably!

  5. I think that seeing as the Facebook ‘story’ idea hasn’t been much of a success, (for my Facebook anyway!), I don’t think ‘Watch’ will succeed either. With youtube, consumers go to one place to search for any type of video possible! Although Youtube Red paid subscription has caused some backlash, it is still just as popular, and I think this Facebook Watch will struggle to gain popularity and success for consumers. Consumers use a particular social media platform or app for a purpose, and I don’t think Facebook’s is to watch videos/shows. Interesting post!
